DELE Spanish Diplomas
Test Format

The exam consists of five separate tests, each of which comprises a variety of different exercises. In order to acquire the Starter, Intermediate or Higher diplomas, a "pass" must be obtained in each of the tests taken.

STARTER LEVEL

Section of the exam	Duration	Format
Reading comprehension:	40 minutes	1. The candidate must choose the correct answers to a number of multiple choice questions about a series of informative texts. 2. The candidate must answer a series of questions by selecting the appropriate information from the text.
Written expression:	50 minutes	Composition of short, simple texts of an informative nature e.g. notes, warnings, etc.
Listening comprehension:	30 minutes	The candidate must complete 4 exercises based on recorded information or simple dialogues by choosing the correct answer.
Grammar and vocabulary:	40 minutes	1. The candidate must match a series of different phrases with their corresponding situations. 2. The candidate must read a series of sentences and identify words and expressions not appropriate to the context. 3. The candidate must complete a text by choosing the correct option.
Oral expression:	10 minutes	The candidate must maintain a conversation lasting between 10 and 15 minutes with a panel of examiners.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Section of the exam	Duration	Format
Reading comprehension:	60 minutes	The candidate must choose the correct answers to 12 multiple choice questions based on 4 texts. These texts will not exceed 450 words in length.
Written expression:	60 minutes	The candidate must write a personal letter and a composition. Each must be between 150 and 200 words in length.
Listening comprehension:	30 minutes	The candidate must answer 12 multiple choice questions based on 4 spoken texts (recordings). These recordings may take the form of warnings, announcements, conversations or interviews.
Grammar and vocabulary:	60 minutes	The candidate must complete the following two exercises: 1. Text completion (20 gaps): the correct option must be chosen from the three provided for each gap. 2. Dialogue completion: the correct option must be chosen to complete a single gap in each of 40 short dialogues.
Oral expression:	10 - 15 minutes	The candidate must maintain a conversation lasting between 10 and 15 minutes with a panel of examiners.

HIGHER LEVEL

Section of the exam	Duration	Format
Reading comprehension:	60 minutes	The candidate must complete the following two exercises: 1. Select the correct answers to 9 multiple choice questions based on three texts. These texts will not exceed 800 words in length. 2. Match up to ten sets of extracts of text.
Written expression:	60 minutes	The candidate must write: 1. A letter dealing with subjects of a non-personal nature. 2. A composition. 3. Each of the above must be between 150 and 200 words in length.
Listening comprehension:	45 minutes	The candidate must answer 16 multiple choice questions based on 4 spoken texts (recordings). These recordings will consist of conversations between two or more speakers or comments/reports broadcast by the media.
Grammar and vocabulary:	60 minutes	The candidate must complete the following three exercises: 1. Text completion (20 gaps): the correct option must be chosen from the three provided for each gap. 2. Multiple choice: a gap must be filled with one of the options provided in each of the 35 sentences that make up the exercise. 3. Error detection: 5 grammar mistakes must be found in one or more short texts.
Oral expression:	10 - 15 minutes	The candidate must maintain a conversation lasting between 10 and 15 minutes with a panel of examiners.
